Detoxify Your Body - 7 Reasons Why

Body cleanse and detox tips. Insights on why and when to detox, finding the right detox program and 7 reasons why it is important to detox 4 times a year.

Toxic chemicals. Air pollution. Mercury fillings. Tainted soil.  Processed foods.  Contaminated water. Those are just a few of the harmful pollutants that affect our bodies through the air we breathe, the foods we eat, the water we drink and the choices we make. The human body is simply not capable of processing all of the toxins we ingest and eventually they accumulate in the blood, liver, colon, tissues and skin. The “foreign invaders” disturb balance and cause symptoms such as fatigue, headaches, joint pain, digestive problems and skin conditions.  Over time the toxins wreak havoc on our bodies and lead to illness and diseases, some of which can be life-threatening. The older we become, the more difficult it is for our bodies to cast out toxic substances that may have been accumulating for years.

In order to rid our body of these poisons and provide a fresh start, many holistic practitioners recommend a quarterly detox to cleanse the colon and boost the immune system. Detoxification has been lauded for centuries by natural healers in many cultures to cleanse the body “from the inside out.” Herbal colon cleanses, sweat lodges, salt scrubs and other detox methods date back to biblical times.

Some of the benefits of detoxification include:

  • Stronger immune system
  • Mental clarity
  • Increased energy
  • Weight Loss
  • Improved Digestion
  • Reduction of chronic pain
  • Reduced risk of several diseases, including colon cancer

There are many types of detoxifying herbs and supplements on the market today. Look for products that contain ingredients such as milk thistle, cilantro, spirulina and dandelion. Milk thistle is a member of the daisy family and its name is derived from the fact that its leaves contain a milky sap. Research shows that the extract from milk thistle seeds contains rich amounts of N-Acetyl Cysteine (NAC), a powerful antioxidant that eliminates metals and free radicals from the body.  NAC binds to heavy metals like mercury which allows the body to eliminate them as waste products.  Cilantro, a bright green feathery herb often used in southwestern recipes, also contains substantial amounts of NAC. Cilantro has a pleasant aroma and has been used in herbal medicine for thousands of years.

Dandelion leaves and roots are included in many detoxification products because of their ability to remove toxins. The roots have diuretic and laxative qualities that cleanse the colon and support proper liver and gallbladder function.

Another key component of an effective detox program is spirulina which is actually blue - green algae. Studies have shown that it is effective in ridding the body of toxins such as mercury and radioactive substances. As an added bonus, spirulina is packed with vitamins, minerals and proteins which boost energy levels and support the immune system.
