Many people believe that the use of lecithin as a supplement can be beneficial in slowing down the aging process. Common sources of lecithin for commercial purposes are soybeans, sunflower seeds and grapeseed. Egg yolks are also high in lecithin and prior to the discovery of soybean lecithin in the 1930s it was the primary source.
Commercially-produced lecithin is currently made from a natural mixture of polar and neutral lipids, including sterols, triglycerides, sphingolipids, glycolipids, fatty acids and carbohydrates. It is commonly used as a thinner in chocolate to help improve its texture by stabilizing the fats.
Sesame oil is a source closer to nature as it contains protein, unsaturated fatty acids, linolenic acid and other trace elements as well as lecithin, all of which are essential to the healthy functioning of the human body. Taking sesame oil as a supplement not only provides lecithin but also promotes a healthy digestion, improves eyesight and helps protect liver function, hence its position as one of the superfoods recommended prolonging life and slowing the aging process.
How to Take Lecithin as a Supplement
Taking a supplement of lecithin before eating a fatty meal helps the fat levels in the blood to return to their normal state much faster than without it. It is widely available as capsules, pills, granules or powder and is primarily sold as a weight loss aid. It can easily be added to smoothies to make it very easy to ingest.
