Healthy Living Is A Personal Choice

Healthy living is about making the right choices. Every day we are faced with hundreds of decisions, large and small, that affect our health for better or worse.  Every single one of us has the keys that unlock the door to a healthy life. It’s just a matter of learning how to use them.

One of the most important keys is a healthy diet. When we eat nutrient rich foods we enjoy abundant energy and radiant health. However, when we litter our diet with junk foods we are likely to feel sluggish and lethargic. A healthy diet includes multiple servings of various grains, fruits and vegetables each day. Hectic lifestyles can make it difficult to always eat a proper diet so many people take green food nutritional supplements to make sure they are getting the nutrients they need.

Regular exercise is another vital component of a healthy lifestyle. Exercise makes your heart stronger, which helps it pump more blood with each heartbeat. This delivers more oxygen to your body and helps it function more efficiently.  Strength training and weight bearing exercises help preserve bone density and stretching exercises help preserve flexibility and improve posture.

Adequate sleep is essential for good health and insomnia is an epidemic in our country. More than 80 million Americans suffer from some form of sleep disorder. The inability to get a good night’s sleep is not something to be taken lightly.  Research has shown that people who get less than seven hours of sleep a night are at increased risk for developing major illnesses such as cancer, heart disease, diabetes and obesity.

Hydration is another important element to support healthy living. Approximately 70% of the human body is comprised of water. Water regulates body temperature and helps transport oxygen to the cells. It also aids in digestion, lubricates and cushions vital organs and flushes toxins from the body. If you are concerned about the quality of the drinking water in your community, consider using a water filter.

One often overlooked component of a healthy lifestyle is dental hygiene. Poor oral hygiene can lead to inflammatory diseases like gingivitis and periodontitis. If left untreated, these diseases can lead to serious cardiovascular problems. Gum disease has also been linked to other significant health issues including diabetes, strokes and bone infections.

Prolonged periods of stress can weaken the immune system and compromise your ability to live a healthy life. Meditation, yoga, moderate exercise, nature walks, soothing music and spending time with close friends and family can help you reduce and cope with the stresses in your life.

The little choices you make every day can make a major difference in the quality and length of your life. A commitment to healthy living is the most important choice you will ever make.
