The Dangers of Energy Drinks

Energy drinks can be risky, and even dangerous to some. It is important that you understand exactly what is inside these drinks. The idea that energy drinks are healthy drinks is beginning to fall apart.  Here are a few of the reasons that the vast majority of energy drinks are not the healthiest choice:

High in sugar

Energy drinks are usually loaded with sugar, which has been shown to damage DNA.  Additionally, if sugar is the main source of energy in an energy drink, you can also expect to have the same spikes and drops that one would experience with any sugary snack.

Lots of chemicals and preservatives

Many people are quite shocked when they carefully read the labels on their energy drinks.  This is due in no small part to the amount of chemicals, food colorings and preservatives that can be found in energy drinks.  Your body doesn’t need such compounds, and this is just yet another way in which energy drinks are not healthy.

Lots and lots of calories

All of that “energy” usually doesn’t come without a few calories.  In fact, many energy drinks are very high in calories, and this could be quite a problem for anyone looking to drop pounds or even just keep their weight under control.

Then there is the issue of caffeine

Caffeine in high levels is dangerous.  In fact, it can even be fatal when too much is consumed.  This means that it is prudent to keep your caffeine consumption at reasonable levels.

Excessive vitamin B levels

It is possible to consume too much of any food or any vitamin as well.  B vitamins do help boost one’s energy levels; however, many energy drinks rely far too much on this fact.  The end result is that many people may end up consuming too much vitamin B!

Those are five good reasons to avoid energy drinks.  However, there are other reasons to find another way to boost your energy as well.  One big reason to ditch your energy drinks is the cost.  When properly redirected that same money could help you boost both your energy and your health at the same time.

Alternative Energy Boosters

If you are looking for an energy boost the first step is to make sure that your body is getting the nutrition that it needs.  Removing fast food and processed foods from your diet and substituting them for healthy options, such as fruits, vegetables, seeds, nuts and healthy grains, will provide your body with the right kinds of nutrition.  This will give you more energy.  Once you have established the right nutritional base, steps such as consuming green tea will serve as a great way to boost your energy levels.  Green tea is full of disease fighting compounds and costs only cents per cup!

Empty calories take many forms.  There are many problems with energy drinks. But luckily there are good low-cost ways to boost your energy and your health at the same time. Healthy snacks, such as nuts and seeds, go anywhere.  A small amount can provide you with healthy protein, omega-3 fatty acids and vitamins and minerals and do it all without chemicals, sugar, caffeine, pesticides or additives.
