Clean Breath Can Equal Poor Health
If you are feeling virtuous about regularly using mouthwash for your dental health, new findings about mouthwash may cause you to think twice.
A study by Queen Mary University in London recruited 19 healthy volunteers who used Corsodyl mouthwash twice daily. They found it had serious negative effects upon their overall health.
Mouthwash Can Significantly Increase Stroke Risk
Within one day of starting to use the mouthwash, the participants found that their blood pressure rose by between 2 and 3.5 units (mmHg). As the risk of dying from heart disease rises by 7% for every two point rise in blood pressure, this increases the risk of dying from a stroke by 10% or more.
The Corsodyl mouthwash which was used in the study contains the antiseptic chlorhexidine. This effectively kills the microbes which the body needs to create nitrate which allows the blood vessels to dilate correctly. The researchers found that mouthwash containing chlorhexidine reduced nitrate production in the mouth by 90% and this caused blood nitrate levels to fall by 25%.
Solutions to the problem of mouthwash include using a brand that does not contain chlorhexidine. Listerine is one such brand; however it can still destroy "good" bacteria as well as bad bacteria. Instead, try Oral Guard mouth spray for healthy teeth and gums. This peppermint spray uses all-natural ingredients and acts as a great bad breath remedy.
Makers of Corsodyl, GlaxoSmithKline, commented on the study's findings by saying that Corsodyl was intended for short-term use only to stop plaque and help prevent gum disease. However, for daily use they recommended Corsodyl Daily which contains a much lower percentage of chlorhexidine.
Mouthwash Kills Off Good Bacteria
Professor Amrita Ahluwalia led the study into the effects of using antiseptic mouthwash on overall health. She was concerned that killing off both good and bad bacteria in the mouth could be a disaster for overall health, as well as raising blood pressure and increasing the risk of mortality.
The professor suggested that antiseptic mouthwash should be used by anyone with a gum or tooth infection but for those with healthy gums and teeth, the risk was unacceptable.
The body needs some bacteria in order to function in a healthy way. Probiotics are essential in the digestive tract and are known to be beneficial for our health. In a similar way, oral probiotics found in the mouth help to maintain the healthy biofilm found on teeth. By regularly using a mouthwash, this biofilm is effectively destroyed.
Natural Solutions for Healthy Gums and Teeth
Those worried about having fresh breath will be pleased to learn that peppermint naturally freshens the breath, and it has excellent medicinal benefits. Peppermint is a known digestive aid and was used in traditional medicine to manage gallbladder disease, coughs, and respiratory infections. In has also been found to help reduce tension headaches and ease the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome. No mouthwash can ever claim to do that!
Xylitol gum has also been shown to protect teeth when chewed after meals. It contains sugar-alcohol which inhibits the creation of acids in the mouth which cause dental decay and cavities. Xylitol has fewer calories than sugar and has a less profound effect on the glycemic index.
Finally, consider replacing your mouthwash with a natural dental oral hygiene spray such as Oral Guard. A short spray of this blend of natural herbs, aloe vera, xylitol, CoQ10 and green tea extract helps keep breath fresh and gums healthy without raising your blood pressure. The Institute for Vibrant Living develops and sells a wide variety of all-natural health supplements.
