The Beauty of Baking Soda
Baking soda comes from the mineral natron, which contains large amounts of sodium bicarbonate. Beginning with the Egyptians, sodium bicarbonate was used as a form of soap, and later in history, it became a valuable baking ingredient for breads and other foods that required rising. Sodium bicarbonate has also been used throughout history for various health purposes. It wasn't until 1846 that the product we know as baking soda was manufactured and sold. In addition to its many other benefits, baking soda can also enhance the appearance. Some experts have suggested that when taken internally, baking soda can help alkalize the body and balance pH levels in the bloodstream. Because an overly acidic environment has been linked to premature aging, baking soda may contribute to beauty from the inside out. This inexpensive, multipurpose product also offers exterior benefits for head-to-toe beauty. Here are just a few ways to use all-natural baking soda to look your best.
To create an exfoliating facial scrub, add a tablespoon of baking soda to a favorite facial cleanser to make a paste. With a circular motion, massage into the face and rinse with warm water for ultra-soft, clean skin. Try combining equal parts baking soda and honey for a powerful, daily acne mask. Apply to the face, and leave on for 15 minutes before rinsing with warm water. For brighter skin, try mixing a tablespoon each of baking soda and lemon juice with a few drops of olive oil to form a paste. Apply to the face for ten minutes, and rinse.
Baking soda makes a great, inexpensive dry shampoo. Just sprinkle a little at the roots and brush through the hair. Add volume to hair by combining 1/4 teaspoon with your daily shampoo. By removing impurities, the baking soda makes hair lighter and enhances volume. This concoction also helps to remove chlorine from hair to prevent discoloration and damage.
The combination of baking soda and strawberries make a great natural whitening paste. Strawberries contain malic acid, which safely removes dental stains, and baking soda is another good whitening agent. Place two large strawberries with two teaspoons baking soda into a blender and pulse into a paste. Apply to the teeth, leave on for 15 minutes, and rinse.

For a spa-like pedicure at home, mix three tablespoons of baking soda and a few drops of lavender essential oil with a gallon of warm water for a stress-relieving foot soak.
