Natural Supplement Zinc - Support Ear Health
Studies have shown that taking an oral zinc supplementation can offer natural and effective support for healthy ears—which translates to healthy hearing. 28 people were studied at the Ankara Numune Research and Education Hospital in Turkey. Researchers determined that low zinc levels in the bloodstream may jeopardize ear health; and that oral zinc supplementation can provide support for ear health. The study subjects took either 50 mg of daily zinc or a placebo. After two months, a whopping 46.4% of the zinc group demonstrated positive progress, leading researchers to conclude that zinc supplementation may indeed play a beneficial role. These positive results make sense because the inner ear contains the highest concentration of zinc of any organ in the body. Numerous clinical studies have shown a correlation between zinc deficiency and ear problems such as tinnitus (a high-pitched ringing sound in the ears) and sensorineural hearing loss (the most common type of hearing loss, occurring in 23 percent of people older than 65 years of age.)
A study published in the American Journal of Otology showed that, "With zinc supplementation in patients who are marginally zinc deficient, there has been improvement in tinnitus and sensorineural hearing loss in about one-third of elderly adults." (Zinc: the Neglected Nutrient Am J Otol. 1989 Mar; 10(2):156-60.) For those who suffer from the ringing of tinnitus, another study linked a significant decrease in tinnitus with a supplementation with 34-68 mg of zinc over a two week period produced. If zinc is indeed the neglected nutrient that helps protect and promote ear health, it only makes sense to supplement your diet with a quality zinc supplement. Zinc is thought by many nutritionists to be the star of all mineral supplements. The current recommended daily allowance for zinc is 15 mg. Zinc is essential for over 100 enzyme systems and for the normal functioning of the immune system. Even though zinc is found in a variety of many foods, it is common for most Americans to be deficient in dietary zinc.
