The Vitamin Water Trap
Calories seem to be hiding just about everywhere, and this includes in all sorts of drinks. Many people are looking for ways to improve their health and turn to products like Vitamin Water in the process. While Vitamin Water, of course, has the word vitamin in its name, does that mean that Vitamin Water has an overall net positive effect on health?
Vitamin Water, it should be stated, may contain a lot of water, but unlike pure water, it is not calorie free. Quite shockingly, Vitamin Water is loaded with about 120 calories. Clearly, there are easier and healthier ways to get your vitamins, for example, taking a high-quality vitamin supplement made from whole food ingredients. A good multi-vitamin supplement has no calories, so drinking Vitamin Water for its vitamins isn't really a smart choice considering the large number of calories. After all, if you are on a diet or watching your weight, you probably already realize that you can do a lot with 120 calories. For example, 120 calories is about what an entire 10 oz. package of frozen strawberries has in it, and the list could go on and on!
Next there is the issue of sugar. Vitamin Water has a lot of sugar. How much sugar? Once again the answer is quite shocking as Vitamin Water packs anywhere from roughly 20 grams of sugar to 32 grams of sugar. One Krispy Kreme doughnut has about 10 grams of sugar and 200 calories and a 12 oz. can of Coke has about 40 grams of sugar. Recently, some scientists and researchers have called on society to completely change its collective perspective on sugar. They have gone so far as to state that sugar is so damaging to DNA and human health that it should be labeled toxic!
More and more researchers and scientists are, in fact, taking this position as we learn more about sugar and its wide myriad of negative health consequences. The bottom line is that the relatively minor amount of vitamins that can be found in Vitamin Water will fail to offset the fact that it is loaded with calories and high levels of sugar. Keep in mind that Vitamin Water essentially has as much sugar as a candy bar! You might feel that you are "going healthy" when you select a Vitamin Water, but its ingredients call this assertion into question.
Should you avoid Vitamin Water? An occasional indulgence is not going to put you in the grave; however, drinking such calorie and sugar-laden drinks on a regular basis is not your best health option. The better option is to simply drink water, use your calories for high quality whole foods and get your vitamins from carefully chosen supplements.
