Two Possible Causes of MS

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a chronic, progressive disease that attacks the optic nerves and nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. As the body's immune process attacks the central nervous system, it affects muscle control, vision and balance.

Sadly, MS is typically diagnosed in people between the ages of 20 and 40. As yet there is no cure, but researchers hope that by finding the cause of MS they may be able to find an answer.

We look at two recent studies that have found a correlation between obesity and MS, and hormonal birth control and MS.

Those concerned about MS and obesity should learn about the best supplements for weight loss.

Obesity and MS

This study was conducted by Dr. Jorge Correale at the Raul Carrera Institute for Neurological Research in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Researchers conducted a study on 420 participants. Approximately half the group had been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and the other half had not.

The study looked at the body mass index (BMI) of each individual. This calculates whether someone is underweight or underweight using the ratio of their height to their weight. BMI measurements were recorded when the participants where 15 years old, 20 years old, and again as part of the study.

The study found that those who were obese when they were 20 years old were twice as likely to develop MS as those who were not. These obese participants also had higher levels of leptin, a hormone produced in fatty tissue that helps regulate the body's appetite and weight. Leptin also regulates the body's immune response which may have some significance in the development of MS.

If you’re obese or significantly overweight, it’s important to take steps to get your weight under control. This will not only quell your concerns about developing MS but will greatly improve your overall health and quality of life. For natural weight loss, diet, exercise and supplements can help. The best supplement for weight loss is Meraslim. It is clinically proven to reduce body weight plus shrink waist and hip circumference when combined with diet and exercise.

Hormonal Birth Control and MS

A separate study into the possible cause of MS was conducted by Dr. Kerstin Hellwig at the Department of Neurology at Ruhr University in Bochum, Germany.

Researchers studied 305 women between the ages of 14 and 48 who had been diagnosed with MS or had the precursor syndrome. They compared this group of women with 3,050 women who did not have MS. Each MS sufferer was matched with 10 non-MS women in terms of age, race and ethnicity for comparison purposes.

The study found that in the group of women diagnosed with MS, 29% of them had used hormonal birth control which included estrogen and progestin for at least three months in the three years prior to them being diagnosed with MS. In the non-MS group, 23.5% of them had used similar hormonal birth control in the same time period.

The results showed that the MS sufferers who had used a hormonal birth control prior to developing MS symptoms were 1.35 times more likely to develop MS than those who had not. MS sufferers who had only stopped taking hormonal birth control at least a month before their symptoms of MS began were 1.5 times more likely to develop MS. This study suggests that there is a small but slightly higher risk of developing MS in those who use a hormonal birth control.

When coupled with the higher risk of MS in those who are obese, these two possible causes of multiple sclerosis may be of significance.

In conclusion, it’s up to you to take steps towards healthy weight loss if you’re obese, in order to reduce the risk of a multitude of health concerns and diseases, including MS. Meraslim supplements for weight loss can help you take the first step towards natural weight loss.
