Food and certain supplements literally fuel your brain. Without good nutrition, your brain cannot function properly.
Eating a steady diet of steak, potato chips, and ice cream would not give you nearly the mental boost that organic fruits, vegetables, and whole grains would. So, when at the grocery or health food store, try to select foods that would have a healthy, positive, therapeutic effect on your brain and body.
Avoid foods that tax your liver and digestive system (which directly affects your brain), including wheat (a common allergen), red meat, saturated fats, alcohol, caffeinated beverages, simple carbohydrates, refined sugar, and dairy products.
Also avoid all processed foods, such as chips or anything else that is created in a manufacturing facility. The rule of thumb is if you can't pronounce the ingredient, you shouldn't put it in your body.
Finally, steer clear of anything that contains hydrogenated fats (also known as "trans fats" ), which have been shown to negatively affect the brain.
Instead, eat a diet rich in whole, organic foods. Incorporate plenty of raw, organic fruits and vegetables, sprouted seeds, whole grains, and legumes into your daily diet. If you eat chicken or turkey, be sure that it is free-range. Eggs also should come from free-range poultry.
Wild-caught, cold-water fish such as salmon, mackerel, and herring as well as ground flaxseed all contain beneficial omega-3 essential fatty acids (EFAs), which have been shown to promote brain health.
Of the omega-3s, DHA is the standout when it comes to brain health. Your brain needs DHA to create healthy nerve cell membranes. Your brain uses nerve cells for mood, attention, and memory.
In addition to providing nutrition, all these food choices boost your natural pancreatic enzyme levels, which helps your digestive system function better, and gives you improved mental energy.
