Clean Eating: How To Eat Clean, Lose Weight, And Feel Great

Start your morning with a green drink smoothie for breakfast.

When it comes to being healthy, Americans often get a bad rap. After all, 69% of the adult population aged 20 years and older is overweight. Sixty-nine percent! And yet, we tend to be a bit obsessed with dieting as a whole, with new "Fad" diets cropping up all over the place. So what gives? Why are we the country with the highest rate of diabetes, heart-disease, and stroke, as well as the biggest pre-occupation with dieting?

There may not be a definitive answer to this question. But thankfully, there's a new perspective on food that's sweeping the nation. One that might get us out of this ironic dichotomy and finally on the path to lifelong health and wellness. It's called Clean Eating.

Clean eating is a simple, common-sense approach that focuses on nutritious whole foods rather than crazy detox teas and single-food, crash diets like the cabbage diet. If you understand the basics of clean eating and work to change your eating habits to be more in line with this concept, you will be less hungry, more satisfied, thinner, and healthier.

The clean eating philosophy has really been around since the 60s, when hippies got turned on to the natural health food movement. There is also the Canadian Fitness, created by model Tosca Reno and her series of cookbooks called Clean Eating in the early 2000s. While she may have been the one who popularized the term "Clean Eating", the concept itself has been around for quite some time.

Here are the basic concepts of clean eating:

  • Eat whole foods
  • Do not eat processed foods, i.e. anything that comes in a box
  • Avoid sugar products like soda pop
  • Avoid unnatural fat and eat only natural fat (monounsaturated and polyunsaturated)
  • Each meal should consist of lean protein, healthy fat, and complex carbs
  • Drink lots of water
  • Portion control
  • 5-6 smaller meals instead of 2-3 larger meals
  • Avoid empty calories found in fast food, pastries, and soda
  • Opt for nutrient-dense healthy snacks like nuts

Here are the benefits of clean eating:

  • Lose fat
  • Increase muscle
  • Improve energy
  • Boost immune system
  • It is a sustainable way to eat / not a fad diet
  • Less expensive than eating out and eating processed foods (even fast food)
  • Better for the environment
  • Less toxins enter your body

If you want to give clean eating a go, but aren't sure where to start, here's a tip: Start your morning with a green drink smoothie for breakfast. Get into the habit of making a smoothie every morning and you'll be well on your way to eating clean for every meal. Make sure your smoothie has some veggies in it such as kale or spinach. It's also best to add a green supplement to boost nutritional content. Just make sure your green supplement is made with whole foods. One great example is All Day Energy Greens, made with 38 superfoods and contains no pesticides or herbicides.
