Post-Workout Nutrition: What To Eat And Drink After A Workout

green drink - post workout

If you're into being fit and healthy, you know that what you eat is important. But did you know that when you eat can be just as critical? Depending on your activity level, the body processes nutrients differently at different times, and it's especially important to pay attention to what you eat after your workout. If you eat the right foods after a workout, you can improve body composition, performance and overall recovery. Drinking green drinks post-workout can help you replenish essential vitamins and minerals that are lost during exercise.

Generally, post-workout nutrition has three specific purposes:

  • Replenish glycogen
  • Decrease protein breakdown
  • Increase protein synthesis

In other words, you want to replenish your energy, increase your muscle size and quality, as well as repair any damage caused by the workout. See, when we work out intensely, we damage tissues at the microlevel, and we use fuel. Which is fine in the long run because it ultimately makes us stronger, leaner, fitter, and more muscular, but in the short term it requires repair.

What to eat

Now that you understand why post-workout nutrition is so important, it's time to get into the food specifics. Basically, you want protein and carbs. Most people aren't very hungry after a heavy workout though, so a full meal can be tough to stomach. Drinking a post-workout smoothie may be a better option, since the body can rapidly digest nutrients when they are in liquid form. Adding a green supplement can help boost the nutritional content of your smoothie which will help your body recover quicker from your workout.
